So I just subscribed and this is my first morning coffee with you. I'm not big into computer games, or gaming at all, because I'm from the Boomer generation. My life and habits are a little different. All of that stuff came out when I was in my 20's...a wireless lapel mike! That's what I need! I was just going to look around and see where I could find one. I'm starting a video thing myself -- well, another one aside from the readings that I've been doing since last year. Hopefully, one day you'll find the time to look into my stuff. Oh yes, and I did get into D&D a couple of years back with my son and some of his friends. I enjoyed it, a lot actually. And as to navigating the video aspects of this thing, well, I just play it by ear.
Computer games are okay...and I'll be the first one to say I'm NOT into them...Everquest was really the only one I loved, but I look at modern games and EQ as ways to connect and spend time with my kids.
Not much else.
Fortnite that I mentioned, and about Lucas, is a game my older kids love, and I watch them play. Kinda cool to watch and ask questions about.
The lapel mic is really good. I tried it on my phone, but I think it's my phone...
So now I'm downloading the substack app on my iPad and seeing if i can do all these things via the iPad.
I'm thinking about the lapel mike. My kids used to play games, my son still does. It's a generational thing, I think. Of course, my kids are a little bit older than yours -- like closer to forty now than thirty. (The oldest just turned 39.) I'm using the iPad to make the videos for my new project, and now, with the wife's old phone, I have a second camera I can use.
No fooling! I read out my stories in one go. I have an Apple, and use Photo Booth, then edit it in iMovies, and put it up for Sundays. I sometimes stumble and because the reading time is sometimes fifteen minutes, I don’t want to start over again. People have said they don’t care if I sometimes stumble and have to repeat myself. And that’s fine by me.
I studied many aspects of substack, but I could t, for some reason, figure out how to give people files without having to do a Dropbox link or the like.
I want the option to have it go out to readers.
Now I wonder if you did that behind a pay wall...does it prevent sharing the link?
I have it behind a pay wall because my paid subscribers get a copy of my ebooks before they hit Amazon. I just set the article to paid and as far as I'm aware, free subscribers can't access the file.
Lucas is 11 years old, and this year has been tough on him. His teachers bullied him, telling him he wasn’t a good enough writer and that he needed remedial classes—all because he couldn’t write fast enough or complete his tests as quickly as his classmates.
For context: he’s been homeschooled his whole life. There has never been a timer on his work. He learns at his own pace, and that has always worked for him.
Lucas has ADHD and a slight form of dyslexia, which makes processing speed an obstacle, but that has never stopped him from loving to read. He devours books—especially graphic novels—and has such a strong relationship with our librarian because of how often he visits and requests books.
But these new teachers? They crushed his confidence.
They made him feel like he wasn’t enough.
They discouraged him from doing what he loved.
And as his Mama Lioness, I ROARED. 🦁
While he was home recovering from pneumonia (he has cold-induced asthma, which is one of the reasons I homeschooled him in the first place), we had one of those 2 or 3 AM nebulizer treatment nights—the kind where sleep is impossible because we had slept too much during the day, and our circadian rhythms were completely off.
I gave up trying to sleep and started writing on my laptop. Lucas opened his eyes, grabbed his laptop, and turned it on too.
I thought he was going to play Fortnite, so I told him it wasn’t a good time.
But then, he turned the screen toward me…
He had opened his Substack and he was writing!!
And just like that, he proved those teachers wrong.
His post? “Don’t be a Noob.”
And after all your love and support for his post, he has been writing again. He hasn’t posted the next one yet but he’s been working on it. He’s had a lot of homework to catch up on since he was sick so he’s pacing himself. I just want to thank you for being so kind and supportive to him! It really has made a difference. ❤️
Just think, Lucas has already accomplished more than most people, including those teachers, by writing and being brave enough to put it out there for people to see.
Thank you, Jaime, for being so supportive and kind to my lil man. He’s 11 years old now, by the way—I keep calling him “lil,” but he’s already my height and has a good 10-15 lbs on me! At this rate, by next summer, I’ll probably be looking up at him. 😊
I’m so excited for your game and can’t wait to see what your readers and Wendel fans inspire you to create. I can’t wait to play!!
And I absolutely love this new theme for you—PLAY! You must always make time for play because that’s where your creative genius flows and continues to gift us with your brilliance!
I have to make an offering to the community and show everyone what I have planned!!!!
Imagine video calls with 400 people.
Imagine, me being able to play the TTRPG with as many people as we wanted.
Imagine private sessions of Ask The Author Anything.
Imagine every room themed with my Wanted Hero artwork, so you are sitting next to Wendell, or you're a member of the Iskari High Council!!
This software makes ZOOM look archaic.
Susan saw how excited I was, and knew how important this will be for LoF....so she agreed to finance whatever I cannot cover myself and let me pay her back in monthly installments.
I’m excited!
Me too =)
Gonna be fun!
You mentioned Joseph and Isaac being willing to playtest, but if you find yourself wanting another playtester, you know where to find me
You are also volunteering?
I can say right now, you are SO invited, Benjamin!!
Yes, I’m volunteering, I would love the opportunity to play any role playing game with you.
Especially one that is being developed about life of fiction!
YESSS!
@Joseph, we have another brain and perspective to add to the development team!
WooHOOO!!

Hey Ben, and welcome!
...a few things....
Computer games are okay...and I'll be the first one to say I'm NOT into them...Everquest was really the only one I loved, but I look at modern games and EQ as ways to connect and spend time with my kids.

We use what we have.
I prefer to do all things with my desktop...and I have a complete portable studio for podcasts....but that doesn't help me with the Substack app.
Thing is, most people don't care about the quality so much as the authenticity of content.
Good thing for you and me =)

Maybe I'm blind but I couldn't find the link to Lucas.
CRAP! THANK you, DW for pointing that out...I didn't insert the link (fixed), but here is the link as well:

Glad to help
I'm not sure if this is what you meant about sharing files but you can put them in a post and let people download them.
https://support.substack.com/hc/en-us/articles/4408381643156-How-can-I-attach-a-file-to-my-Substack-post
This is EXACTLY what I was trying to figure out.
Gosh, thank you so much, DW!
Oh good. I'm glad it was that easy.
I studied many aspects of substack, but I could t, for some reason, figure out how to give people files without having to do a Dropbox link or the like.

May need to do a test.

Thank you for that EXACT example, DW....that's what I would like to do. =)
Like this one. https://dwdixon.substack.com/p/a-gift?r=3onfnc

I am SO glad you joined the conversation, my friend.
You've solved a ton of headaches for me.

All in his time, Kristie.
...all in his exceptional, perfect time.
Teddy Roosevelt started out in a similar fashion.
Just think, Lucas has already accomplished more than most people, including those teachers, by writing and being brave enough to put it out there for people to see.
EXACTLY!!!
Fantastic point, DW!
That’s a great perspective. Thank you for your thoughts.

I'm on a mission to raise money today.
Making a post right now.
Mission accomplished 😉 Now go out and make us even more proud. Even though I don’t know how that’s possible at this point! 🫶
